This Boli figure from Mali is a power object (known as boli in the plural form) created by the Bamana people. The Boli is a significant part of Bamana spiritual life, designed to accumulate and control the life force known as nyama, which is believed to be a vital energy that exists throughout the universe. The Boli is typically constructed with a wooden armature, or core, which is wrapped in cotton cloth and then encrusted with layers of various sacrificial materials. These materials may include items such as blood from chickens or goats, chewed kola nuts, alcoholic beverages, honey, metal, animal bones, and plant matter. Over time, as these materials harden and crack, they form a dense, crusty patina that imbues the object with increasing spiritual power.

The shape of this Boli is ambiguous and often interpreted as zoomorphic, suggesting the figure of an animal, though it may also take on anthropomorphic characteristics. The Boli shown here features a rough surface and stands on four short legs, with a hump rising from the top, which adds to its distinctive form. The purpose of the Boli is not only to embody and concentrate nyama but also to protect and empower the community. These objects are owned and handled exclusively by male initiation societies, whose members undergo long periods of training to understand the spiritual significance and potent power of the Boli.

To display this Boli, place it in a central location where its symbolic and spiritual importance can be appreciated. Its unique form and the mystery surrounding its creation make it a powerful representation of the Bamana people’s connection to both the natural and spiritual worlds. This object also serves as a reminder of the deep, esoteric knowledge held by those who protect and use it within their spiritual practices.
