This chair from the Welega Province of Ethiopia is a striking example of Welega-Oromo design and craftsmanship. Carved from a single block of wood, it is a sturdy, fully functional piece of furniture that commands attention with its generous proportions and dramatic cutouts. Its surface patina—especially along the seat and backrest—highlights a unique history. Three arched legs support the seat, with upright stilts extending from the base for both stability and visual appeal.

In the Welega region, high-backed wooden chairs were symbols of authority, often used by elders or chiefs during council meetings. The elevated backrest indicated the status of the individual it supported, underscoring the chair’s role in cultural and ceremonial contexts. Considering its age, this particular example is remarkably well-preserved. It stands as a testament to the longstanding cultural practices of the Welega Oromo people. Measuring 33 x 18 x 17 inches, it offers both functional utility and a striking representation of Ethiopian heritage.

Exported many decades ago—and rare even in Ethiopia—this chair comes from the private reserve of collector William Simmons. It presents a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of exceptional artistry and historical value.
